£150,000 hospital suite ransacked

Thieves have ransacked a brand new state-of-the-art hospital suite, before it was due to open.

Police believe £150,000 of equipment from the endoscopy suite at the Royal South Hants Hospital, Hampshire, were stolen to order, possibly by foreign criminal gangs.

They are investigating if it is part of an organised criminal racket smuggling high-tech hospital equipment abroad.

Hampshire Police say the criminals knew exactly what they were doing, and targeted the brand new suite before it had CCTV cameras installed.

The NHS Security Management Service said: "We regard the theft of any medical equipment very seriously, and we are currently gathering information from local NHS organisations on the extent and nature of such activity."
